Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society (PRRPS) is a not-for-profit incorporated association formed in 1973 to preserve the railway between Port Augusta and Quorn through Pichi Richi Pass. The Society is administered under the Associations Incorporation Act 1985 (SA). PRRPS operates the Pichi Richi Railway as a Not-for-profit business [ABN 24 530 998 354].
PRRPS has progressively restored and operated the heritage Pichi Richi Railway as a working public museum. PRRPS has also preserved a large collection of historic locomotives, and goods and passenger vehicles, restoring many to working order. Volunteers are crucial to the ongoing viability of the railway.
Organisation Vision
Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society Inc. (PRRPS) plans to strengthen its position as a key heritage-based tourism attraction in the Flinders Ranges, to secure the economic future of the railway and to promote tourism to the region. This will be achieved by ensuring the railway is operated in a sustainable manner and providing an exceptional experience for our customers through safe, accessible and professional operations.
Organisation Object
The object of PRRPS, as outlined in the Constitution is:
“To conserve the narrow gauge railway through Quorn and the Pichi Richi Pass, Flinders Ranges, South Australia, as an operating museum”
Our intent is to conserve the railway to represent its era of operations by South Australian Railways and Commonwealth Railways from 1878 to the mid 1960's
The Society’s key objectives in delivering this mission include ensuring it will:
- Provide an exceptional experience for our customers
- Allow safe operation
- Have accessible and functional Infrastructure
- Provide highly professional internal operations
- Have enthusiastic members strengthening the PRRPS.
Workforce and Volunteers
Currently the PRRPS has no paid employees. The Society has approximately 400 members.
Around 100 members support the railway regularly by volunteering in operation and maintenance of the railway and by providing services remotely. Other groups of non-members provide active support with maintenance of the railway.
