Purpose of the Disability Action & Inclusion Plan
The purpose of this Plan is to ensure we consider the needs of our members, passengers and visitors and respond in a way that provides the best possible experience.
Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society Inc. (PRRPS) is committed to creating a welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment where people of all backgrounds, cultures, ages and abilities feel valued as members, volunteers, passengers and visitors.
Disabilities may be physical, developmental, psychological or intellectual. PRRPS recognises a significant need to provide better access to its trains for people with limited mobility.
Our Commitment to Inclusion and Accessibility
Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society Inc. has key objectives, to
- Provide the most inclusive experience to the most diverse range of people possible and,
- Have accessible and functional Infrastructure.
Consultation Process
The PRRPS Board has established a Disability Access Subcommittee (DAC) to address Disability Access & Inclusion
The following Terms of Reference for the sub-committee were approved by the Board in July 2024.
- Advise the Board on its obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and any relevant Regulations or Standards
- Advise the Board on ways and means of implementing the Disability Access Preliminary Report provided by Rodney Barrington
- Prepare a Disability Action Plan (DAP) for Board approval. The approved DAP to be lodged with the Australian Human Rights Commission
- Investigate external funding for disabled access projects.
- Other related matters as directed by the Board.

The Disability Action & Inclusion Plan has been completed and includes consultation processes. Currently, two members of the DAC are on the Board.
Monitoring and Evaluation
The Disability Access Sub-committee provides the minutes of its meetings to the PRRPS Board.
Achievements to Date
Following from the PRRPS objective to “have accessible and functional infrastructure” the Society has made a number of improvements in the past 25 years. Further improvements are planned.
- Ground level access to new buildings erected after 2000, including the Port Augusta depot, station toilets, and members’ facilities and accommodation.
- Compliance with Rail Safety National Law, as administered by the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator with regular Audit.
- Wheelchair accessible toilets provided at the Quorn and Woolshed Flat stations and the maintenance depot.
- A wheelchair space with anchors is established in the Brill railcar trailer, but no safe wheelchair access is provided.
- A wheelchair area including a non-compliant accessible toilet is provided in Guards Van NYAB15. Wheel chairs can only board and alight at the Port Augusta station. The train stops for 2 hours at Quorn which has a ground level platform at which alighting is not possible. A wheelchair lifter has been purchased and will be installed.
- Improved paving at the Quorn and Woolshed Flat stations.
- Providing for members to volunteer from home by on-line working.
- Improved traffic & pedestrian rail crossings in the Locomotive Depot.
