Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society (PRRPS) is delighted to advise that it has now signed deeds to acquire former South Australian Railways (SAR) locomotives 843 and 846 from One Rail Australia. These two locomotives will be used by PRRPS to make one operational unit, the body of 843 onto 846’s narrow gauge traction bogies. 846 and the broad-gauge bogies will provide a source of spares (including traction motors interchangeable with NT76’s).

Locomotives 843 and 846 have been very generously donated to PRRPS by One Rail, however the logistics of moving them, 843 from Dry Creek South to Quorn, and 846 from Port Lincoln to Quorn will be the responsibility of PRRPS. We are fortunate that Max Cranes at Port Augusta has generously offered to assist with its expertise in cranage and over-dimensional transport at substantially reduced rates as a commercial sponsorship of this project.

After arrival at Quorn, there will be much work required to unite 843 with the narrow-gauge bogies from 846, and then restore the locomotive to an operational status that is presentable. To allow for costs and contingencies in the logistics arrangements, as well as new batteries and painting, the PRRPS Executive has proposed an appeal target of $40,000. The acquisition of an 830 representative for PRR has been a long-term goal. 830 Class locomotives based at Peterborough operated to Quorn on regular goods services. 858 on one occasion worked a train from Quorn to Hawker to collect remaining rollingstock prior to the line being closed. One of the 830s also had a cameo role in the film, ‘Sunday Too Far Away’, starring Jack Thompson, at Gimal (Quorn renamed for the film) Railway Station.

This online form can be used to donate to this appeal. PRRPS is self-funded and relies on contributions from the community to support its activities. All payments will be securely processed by our payment processor, Stripe.

The members of PRRPS thank you for your support in preserving an 830 Class on the narrow gauge in working order for future generations to enjoy.
