15 January: Celebrate the first freight train to Darwin
Join Pichi Richi Railway and ride our double-headed special alongside the first freight train to Darwin.
- A mixed goods and passenger train, hauled by the first Ghan diesel locomotive, will recreate a typical train to the ‘Red Centre’ of the 1950s, departing from Quorn and returning in the evening.
- Departing from Port Augusta, bound for Stirling North, a train headed by recently restored steam locomotive NM25.
These trains will combine to form a double-headed mixed train, running into Port Augusta parallel with the inaugural Adelaide–Darwin freight.
January 31st: Experience outback steam from the 1930s
Ride behind Pichi Richi Railway’s restored steam locomotive NM25 in our heritage carriages to experience outback steam railway travel as it was in the 1930s. These journeys are from Port Augusta to Stirling North and return.
February 1st: Ride alongside the inaugural Darwin Ghan
Pichi Richi Railway trains will depart from both Port Augusta and Quorn. They will combine at Stirling North to form a typical 1930s Afghan Express led by steam locomotive NM25.
Running parallel with the inaugural Ghan into Port Augusta, our train will convey vintage motor vehicles on flat wagons just like yesteryear! Return to Quorn will be by vintage diesel.
