Afghan Express ‘Mixed Train’ Sat April 21
as part of Steam Up Quorn April 21/22

MEDIA RELEASE

Hordes of photographers and onlookers are expected at Port Augusta at 10.30am Saturday 21 April 2007, when Pichi Richi Railway stages a recreation of a mixed Ghan, on the scheduled Afghan Express bound for Quorn.

Instead of the usual passenger carriages only, this train will be a ‘mixed Ghan’, recreating the days of the legendary old Ghan, that included a mixture of passenger and freight vehicles, such as flat wagons, louvre vans and water gins. The flat wagons on Saturday’s train will carry vintage cars, reflecting an era when cars were transported north on the train.

“A must for photographers and anyone wanting to get a feel for the past”, said Marketing Officer Cathy Smythe.

The train will arrive at Quorn at 12.30 for passengers to visit the Steam Up Quorn celebrations occurring all weekend at the Railway’s workshops. Held between 10am and 5pm on both days, the workshops will be open with fascinating displays, demonstrations, entertainment, food and much more. A newly restored Motor Inspection Vehicle Car will be launched by Barry Wakelin at 1.30pm Saturday.

For train bookings please call 1800 440 101, or visit Wadlata Outback Centre, 41 Flinders Terrace, or the South Australian Visitor and Travel Centre, King William Street, Adelaide 1300 655 276.
