The Inaugural Wizards Explorer departed from the Port Augusta Railway Station on Sunday 18 April 2004. The Wizards Explorer was the first of this type of train for Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society Inc, a wizards and witches theme train, aimed at 5-12 year olds. The Wizards Explorer ran to full capacity, booking out well before the Inaugural train departed, indicating an overwhelming success for Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society Inc. The success of this train hinged on a group of hardworking volunteers who helped to make the day a huge success for Pichi Richi Railway, and for those travelling on the train.

Pichi Richi Railway plan to run another 3 Wizards Explorer throughout the year in the upcoming school holidays. These are on the following dates:

  • Sunday 4 July, departing Quorn Railway Station at 4pm.
  • Sunday 26 September, departing Quorn Railway Station at 4pm.
  • Due to the success of the first Wizards Explorer, it is recommended that passengers wanting to join in on the magic and fun book their seats well in advance!

Passengers were treated to decorated carriages, volunteers in costume, and quizzes with prizes on famous young wizards and witches. Passengers embraced the theme with great enthusiasm, and the decision of best dressed wizards and witches was a very difficult decision. It was also great to see parents getting involved with the feel of the day and dressing up as wizards and witches also!

A booked out train ensured that everyone was excited and looking forward to their adventure with Pichi Richi Railway. Comments from children and parents were extremely positive, and many said that they were looking forward to travelling on the train again in the future. Passengers came from as far away as Port Lincoln, Whyalla and Port Pirie to join in the fun.
