Sundowner Explorer

Departing Quorn at 5.00 pm, we travel through ranges painted sunset colours aboard our 1928-built Barwell Bull diesel railcar 106 and trailer 305 . This is the best time to see wildlife in the stunning Pichi Richi Pass. Service returns to Quorn at 7.30 pm.

It is not unknown for the train to have to slow down for kangaroos on the track!

Barwell Bulls were the former South Australian Railways Model 75 railcars designed by J. G. Brill Company of Philadelphia, USA.  Brill was the largest manufacturer of streetcars and interurban cars in the USA and produced more streetcars, interurbans and gas-electric cars than any other manufacturer, building more than 45,000 streetcars alone.

The Barwell Bull nickname refers to South Australia's Premier Sir Henry Barwell, who was Premier when the railcars were introduced, and the unique sound of the railcar's air horn. For over 40 years, these railcars serviced virtually all of South Australia's country lines.  RC 106 saw service all through the Peterborough division of the SAR.  Car 305 was built to narrow-gauge dimensions, but saw all of its life with the SAR on broad gauge as Car 219, and then became Permanent Way Sleeper 26.  In 1995, it was returned to service as Brill trailer 305.
