MEDIA RELEASE

Pichi Richi Railway celebrates NSU52’s 50 years of service on Sunday 30 May 2004. This first generation diesel locomotive represented the beginning of the end of steam on Australia’s railways when introduced in 1954. To commemorate this event a special train will depart from Port Augusta Railway Station at 10am on Sunday 30 May. NSU52 will “double-head” with recently restored steam locomotive NM25 to recreate a typical “Marree Mixed” train on a return journey to Quorn.

The trip will include photo stops in the spectacular Pichi Richi Pass. On the return journey NSU52 will be “banked” in the rear as far as Summit by NM25. This was typical for trains departing Quorn for Port Augusta in the 1940s and 1950s. NSU52 will continue on from Summit alone, into Port Augusta arriving shortly after 4:00pm.

NSU52 was the first diesel-electric locomotive to run on narrow gauge lines in South Australia, paving the way for modern-day train services. Along with “class leader” NSU51, NSU52 was the first diesel locomotive to haul the original Ghan all to way to Alice Springs on 24 June 1954.
