Ticket sales and booking conditions

BOOKINGS: Full payment is required to make an electronic or over the counter booking

TICKET SALES: Advance booking is recommended: by toll-free phone 1800 PRRAIL (1800 777 245), by booking through the Flinders Ranges Visitor Information Centre (08 8620 0510‬) or other regional Visitor Information Centres in South Australia, or by booking online at www.pichirichirailway.org.au.  Ticket sales are open at Departure points 30 minutes prior to the departure time shown.

The following Passenger Classification Definitions apply:
  • Free: Passengers under 4 years may travel free of charge if they do not occupy a seat.
  • Children: Aged 4–14 inclusive, and Secondary School students 15+. Student cards must be shown on request.
  • Concession:  Passengers carrying a valid Pensioner Concession Card, Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, Health Care Card or tertiary Student Card. Cards must be shown on request.
  • Family: 2 adults and up to 2 children or full-time secondary students.
  • Adult: Other passengers aged 15 and over
  • Group: A discount of 10% off the combined total fare applies for group bookings of 15 or more paying passengers travelling on the Pichi Richi Explorer, Afghan Express, Twilight Explorer, Barwell Bull and Flinders Flyer services. Group discount does not apply to Private Hire or Charter services or special events.

Conditions of travel

CHANGES OR CANCELLATION OF SCHEDULED SERVICES:

Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society (PRRPS) advises that timetabled services are subject to cancellation or alteration without notice.

A proposed steam-hauled service may be replaced by a diesel railcar or diesel-hauled service for the following reasons:

  • In the case of total fire bans being issued in the Flinders District;
  • Prevailing weather conditions posing a hazard to operations; or
  • Mechanical breakdown or circumstances outside the control of PRRPS.

Refunds  

  1. Service cancellation: In the unlikely event that a service is cancelled, PRRPS will offer a replacement ticket voucher able to be used on an alternative service. The replacement voucher is valid for three years. As an alternative, a 100% cash refund can be arranged.
  2. Inability to travel advised before departure – a cash refund less a 15% service fee can be arranged.  Where bookings have been made in the current month through the FRVIC, or for Group bookings, refund requests should be made in person or by phone to 1800 PR RAIL.  For other bookings, or where a booking has been made online, please call 08 8641 1527‬ or email This email address is being protected from spambots.   3. No-show or failure to board your booked service: No refunds offered.
  4. Shortened or incomplete journeys: No refunds offered.
  5. Exceptional circumstances – a full refund may be provided on application to the Secretary.

CHILDREN: Children must be accompanied by an adult and adults/parents/carers accompanying children are reminded of their responsibility and need to adequately supervise and control those in their care.

DANGEROUS GOODS: Carriage of dangerous goods on passenger trains is prohibited.

DISABLED ACCESS: Travellers who require mobility assistance are asked to phone the Flinders Ranges Visitor Information Centre Ph 08 8620 0510‬ or 1800 PR RAIL (1800 777 245) to discuss their needs before booking. Fold-up wheelchairs can be accommodated, however, travellers must have sufficient mobility to embark or disembark via the carriage steps as there are no wheelchair loading facilities available.

LIQUOR: No on-board consumption of alcoholic beverages is permitted with the exception of special events when a special restricted license will detail the conditions of consumption.

PASSENGER CONDUCT: Anti-social conduct will not be tolerated and may result in the offender being removed from the train.

PETS: No pets are allowed on scheduled services. Guide and Assistance Dogs are permitted.

PRAMS: Trains consist of historic carriages that have steps and narrow doorways making access for large prams difficult or impossible. Collapsible strollers can be accommodated.

SAFETY: The safety of travellers is of paramount importance to Pichi Richi Railway and we adhere to accredited safety and maintenance standards monitored by the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR). From time to time, train staff may issue information or directions that are safety-related and your attention and co-operation are appreciated.

SEATING: Seats on all services are now allocated at the Ticket Office on the day of travel before departure. It is suggested that you arrive 60 minutes before the scheduled departure time to receive seat reservations and complete COVID-19 registration requirements. Most seating is configured so that it runs along each side of the carriage under the windows.

SMOKING: Smoking is prohibited in trains and in station buildings and Pichi Richi Railway facilities.
