FIVE years ago, the enthusiasts at the Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society peeled back some masonite on a decrepit rail carriage they were restoring and stumbled onto a little piece of Australian history.

Carved in the wooden interior of Car 5 were names and numbers. They figured out the scratchings, graffiti really, had been left by soldiers who had used the carriage to travel to and from the fighting in World War II.
