Forty years of family fun on the Pichi Richi Railway

Delighting kids young and old since 1974, the Pichi Richi Railway celebrates forty years of heritage train operations on 9-10 August with a Family Fun Fair at its home in the heart of the timeless Flinders Ranges.

Originally opened in 1879 and once stretching all the way to Alice Springs, the oldest remaining section of the narrow-gauge Central Australia Railway—the “Old Ghan” line—was returned to life in 1974 by the volunteers of the Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society.  Since its formation in 1973, the Society has restored the line between Port Augusta and Quorn, as well as returning a significant collection of steam and heritage diesel locomotives and antique carriages to working condition.

Celebrating 40 years of the Pichi Richi Railway

In 2014 the volunteers of the Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society celebrated 40 years restoring and running this iconic heritage railway.

ANZAC tribute train: 26 April 2014

Pichi Richi Railway is pleased to again be re-enacting a narrow gauge troop train for Great Southern Rail's 2014 ANZAC Tribute Journey.

Seats on this special train are available to the public only for a one way journey from Quorn to Port Augusta departing at 2:30pm.

Double-shot of spectacular steam: 8 June 2013

Steam up with a double-header train and watch the Flinders Ranges come to life!

On Saturday 8 June two heritage steam engines will meet at Woolshed Flat in the heart of the Pichi Richi Pass, then join together in a 'double-header' to make the historic journey to Quorn—a spectacle that happens just twice each year.

Troop train re-enactment: 27 April 2013

On Saturday 27 April, Pichi Richi Railway will be commemorating Australia's wartime efforts with a special steam journey from Quorn to Port Augusta.  A special Afghan Express will include historic military vehicles.

The Afghan Express will depart Port Augusta at 10.30am, with the military vehicles to be added to the train for the Quorn to Port Augusta leg of its journey departing at 2.30pm.
