Our train, hauled by a former Ghan vintage diesel locomotive, makes two return journeys from Quorn—allowing you to join us in either Port Augusta or Quorn.

For those who will board in Quorn, the train leaves Quorn at 3.00pm, returning at 8:30pm for dinner and sweets at the Transcontinental Hotel. The train will stop at Woolshed Flat where hors’doeuvres will be served.

Horses will be transported on the Pichi Richi Explorer and Transcontinental trains, which double-head from Quorn to Woolshed Flat, where the horses are unloaded for a trail ride back to Quorn.

Event to commemorate the restoration of former Ghan steam locomotive NM25.

Details of its restoration project are available on the NM25 Restoration Project page.

Pichi Richi Railway invites you to celebrate the New Year in style, aboard the Afghan Express. Pichi Richi Railway's popular New Years' Eve train is running again this year, with a few variations on past events.

Using an historic diesel locomotive, built to haul traffic on the original narrow gauge Ghan line, our train will depart from Platform 1 at Port Augusta station at 6:00pm on Tuesday 31 December 2002. We will gently roll through Port Augusta, past the netball courts, under the Highway One overpass, and out across the Bird Lake towards Stirling North.

150 passengers from as far away as England enjoyed a night out to remember with Pichi Richi Railway. A full dinner was served progressively at locations along the line, and guests were able to see in the new year in a relaxed and congenial atmosphere. One PRR member even brought out the bagpipes for an im promptu rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

Pichi Richi Railway ran trains to coincide with the Tracks to Federation celebrations in Port Augusta.

Following the success of similar trains in previous years, Pichi Richi Railway once again joined the Stockyard Arena Association in a special train.  Horses and their riders were transported from Quorn to Woolshed Flat on Sunday 10 June, as part of the regular Pichi Richi Explorer train.

This train has proven popular with photographers and passengers alike, as it is only run once a year, and recreates the atmosphere of old time mixed trains.
